As Marchas Populares are Lisbon's most iconic cultural and popular event. Celebrated every year on the 12th of June. Most historical neighbourhoods in Lisbon compete through dancing (Marcha), hand made dazilling costumes, an original themed song and a choreography leading to an enchanting and typical overall performance. Participants (Marchantes) come from all over the Lisbon region, often after long working days, aspiring to win over the other neighbourhoods. Often, it is a family affair with participants joining for generations. The storytelling behind the performance is embedded in Lisbon's history and legends.

But is the 12th of June really the heart of the event ? The anticipation and preparations, the fitting of the handmade costumes, the shaping of the choreography, the makeup, the rehearsals and creativity around the popular dance are really the beating heart of the Marchas Populares. The competition is fierce and deeply rooted in each neighbourhood's pride.

Months prior the event, coaches and marchantes get together weekly to elaborate their unique performance. Commitment and pride are the base line of one's devotion to the Marcha, their Marcha

This project is not about the big day but rather about the backbone of São Vicente's neighbourhood Marcha; the back and forth during rehearsals, the get togethers, the building up to the big day, the brotherhood & fraternity, the engagement and loyalty to one's local identity.
